Drivers regularly park in the middle of the bike path. Many of them know the problem: You really only have to go to the bakery or ATM very briefly - but cannot find a parking space. The bicycle lane seems to be a welcome alternative. Warning light on and leaving the car. That can be expensive though because it makes 35 Euros (31 GBP) in Germany. It could - because nobody really complains or even calls the police!
But how do drivers react when we park a bike in the middle of the road - with a sign saying "Just a quick bakery stop"? We tested that in Berlin, on the Uhlandstraße at noon, a side street of Kurfürstendamm. And that’s when things really took off. The police came, the television came, but above all, many drivers came up and wondered "What the hell is going on here?".
